When Fear Became Faith, 2025, oil on canvas, 36 × 48 inches
Artist Statement
This painting stems from a personal experience of fear and spiritual awakening that took place in a small, light-filled room. The experience became a turning point, where fear transformed into renewal through faith. The work reflects how light both literally and spiritually reveals the presence of love in ordinary spaces.
This painting reconstructs the memory of my old room through fragments of other spaces. I started by creating a digital collage from found paintings, using different parts of them to reconstruct the room where a personal and spiritual experience once occurred. The process of piecing together these borrowed images mirrors how memory functions - in a partial, layered, and uncertain way.
When translating this collage, I tried to transform imagery and color into an ambiguous environment that holds presence and absence. The recognizable traces of furniture, light, and space act as anchors, blurred with variations of transparent and opaque yellow squares that suggest a state between physical and divine. The work becomes less about documenting a specific place and more about invoking what it felt like to inhabit that memory and how spaces of the past continue to hold us and how light can turn the familiar into something sacred.
